It illustrates the history, traditions, faith, and beliefs of the African American culture while portraying the journey from slavery to freedom through dance, spirituals, gospels, and blues music. In this painting the man and woman show dependence on one another both physically and emotionally. This pose reflects the trust that people hold in Jesus and his power to save those in need. People treasure hope and have faith in the idea of salvation by Jesus, even in times of desperation.
