Description
The interior of Fairman’s Wallpaper & Paint Company on Fullerton and Centre Ave in Pittsburgh Hill District. There were counters and tables and chairs where customers could sit and look through wallpaper books. In the 1940’s, Fairman’s distributed wallpaper books and made catalogs for other paperhangers and for hardware and department stores in small towns. The books were put together by the family. They chose the patterns from the manufacturers’ samples. Bigger samples of wallpaper were showcased in a display on the wall. Each year the sample books were changed to make room for new patterns. I was allowed to take the old books upstairs and cut and paste the paper to make art work.
